If you own a drone, chances are that you have seen your drone lose connectivity with your controller and fly away on its own.  Unfortunately, it is way too common of a thing for a drone owner to say something along the lines of “ohh my gosh, my drone flew away, what do I do now?”.  Droneflytech.com has done a considerable amount of research into what can be done in such cases. I will go ahead and share a few bits and pieces from the big guide here with you for convenience.

5 Tips on Finding a Lost Drone

IDEA #1. Use a Second Drone for the Search – Here is an important tip and idea on the “my drone flew away” matter. Having a second drone to utilize for the search allows for you to take this drone up to get a bird’s eye view of the general area where your 1st drone went missing. You can cover quite a bit more ground this way. All you really need is a cheapo drone with a camera that you can fly in the lost-drone area.

IDEA #2. Drone Lights – If your lost drone still has some battery life left in it, go ahead and look for any lights in the area. Quite often, if the blades have been damaged or broken off, the drone will flash red led lights. Again, try to use a second drone for this as well.

IDEA #3. Go Home & Return Button – Go ahead and hit the Go Home & Return button on your controller.  If this is not something that you have already tried, if your drone just lost communication with the controller; hit the Go Home button on the controller.  There is still a good chance that the controller might be able to communicate this command to the drone unit (even if the Video Camera feed has been cut.

IDEA #4. Never Turn the Controller Off – If your controller loses communication with the drone, do not turn the controller off. The reason for this is that if you start the search for your lost drone, chances are that the controller will try to reestablish the connection with the drone as soon as you are close enough to it. This is one of the best ways of locating your lost drone, by the use of your controller.

IDEA #5. Check Trees – My Drone Flew Away, but it could be hiding somewhere in a tree. Yep, this is a super common one. Due to the drone’s propeller/blades span, there is a good chance the the drone might have been caught up in a tree somewhere. Look in between the trees as well as the on the tree tops (A second Cheapo drone might come in handy here).

Ultimately, most people will find their drone one way or another, but the speed at which it can be found with determine the condition of the drone. Even though some drones can fly in rain or water, most of them are not going to be waterproof. It is super important to go out and try to find the drone ASAP. No procrastinating. How To Prevent Drone a Drone Fly Away Problem with Drone Trackers!

The easiest and most effective way to prevent a drone from being lost is to add a tracker to it. There are a few different types of drone trackers out there that one can get. There is a Bluetooth tracker, a Cellular tracker and a Dedicated tracker. We prefer the Dedicated tracker over all others due to the fact that the dedicated tracker has a really good range, usually 2+ miles. Where the Bluetooth tracker fails is that it has shorter range when compared to the Cellular and Dedicated trackers. The Cellular tracker on the other hand has a monthly fee and the tracker itself has to be in cellular tower range. This is not a good application if you are wanting to fly your drone out in the woods, wilderness or mountains somewhere.

The Dedicated tracker on the other hand has zero monthly fee, has an awesome range and doesn’t require any type of service on it whatsoever (no cellular tower range needed). The Bluetooth tracker is the least expensive option, but again it is super short in range when compared to the Cellular and Dedicated one. The Cellular and Dedicated trackers are pretty similar in price ranges. We will go ahead and provide some information on our favorite Dedicated tracker below.
